Nel XV secolo fanno la loro comparsa gli europei (portoghesi, spagnoli ed olandesi), i quali fondano una fitta rete di stabilimenti commerciali. Nel XVIII secolo, l’impero delle spezie viene sostituito da una penetrazione sempre più sistematica.
La colonizzazione e la penetrazione commerciale europea prima e statunitense poi, portano al massimo lo sfruttamento delle terre. Inoltre, la rivalità tra le grandi potenze si scatena durante la Prima guerra mondiale anche in Asia, come pure la Seconda guerra mondiale viene accanitamente combattuta nel continente.
Solo dopo il 1920 si risveglia lo spirito nazionalistico nei vari paesi asiatici.
